London Bus Tender Awards: New Routemasters to Continue on Route 453

The London Bus Tender Awards, announced by Transport for London (TfL), have revealed that the three-door, two-staircase hybrid New Routemasters will continue to operate on route 453.

LBSL intends to enter into new contracts for the following routes with the operators listed below:

Route 385
Retained by: Stagecoach East London
PVR: 1
Vehicles: Existing diesel single deck
Contract Start Date: 18th October 2025
Contract End Date: 20th October 2028


Route 386
Retained by: Go-Ahead London Central
PVR: 10
Vehicles: Existing diesel single deck
Contract Start Date: 29th November 2025
Contract End Date: 1st December 2028

Route 453 (24h)
Retained by: Go-Ahead London Central
PVR: 30
Vehicles: Existing New Routemaster
Contract Start Date: 15th November 2025
Contract End Date: 15th November 2030

The diesel and hybrid vehicles detailed above will meet Euro VI emissions standards.

It’s interesting to see how TfL is retaining the New Routemasters, as reported in the previous London Bus Tender Awards, while undergoing a process to convert their bus fleet to 100% zero-emission electric vehicles, a goal they aim to achieve by 2030.

As stated in my previous articles, I would like to see a new zero-emission electric bus that is better than the New Routemaster, as shown in the image below. Multiple bus manufacturers should be encouraged to design and build one for evaluation in passenger service.
