Transport for London Once Again Postpones Release of the Big Red Book Sixth Edition

This short article provides an update on the progress of the much-anticipated sixth edition of the Big Red Book, which many had expected to be released in 2025. The information was published by Transport for London (TfL) in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

I am afraid that TfL does not hold the requested information. Progression with edition 6 of the Big Red Book is currently on hold, with discussions currently taking place within TfL and with stakeholders about future training requirements for bus drivers. It is felt appropriate that we await the outcomes of those discussions before further development of the Big Red Book. Our current aim is to have the new edition available around the end of this year/beginning of next year.

The fifth edition of the Big Red Book was released in 2019—well before the Covid-19 pandemic began in 2020.

It is unfortunate that there has been such a lengthy delay in releasing the updated guide for London’s bus drivers. The Big Red Book is not only essential for drivers but also valuable for accessibility groups and other stakeholders who rely on understanding the procedures and guidance—particularly regarding support for disabled passengers and wheelchair users.

There should be improved transparency regarding the release of the sixth edition. Clear and timely communication from TfL would help manage expectations and maintain confidence among drivers, passengers, and advocacy groups who depend on accurate and up-to-date guidance to ensure safe, inclusive, and consistent service across the network.

It is worth noting that I did not make the FOI request myself, as this information is already publicly available on the TfL website for general viewing. Additionally, websites like WhatDoTheyKnow also publish FOI requests and their responses openly for the public, helping to ensure transparency and accessibility of important information.
