Happy New Year 2026 to all my readers! I hope you had a wonderful time celebrating the start of the year, whether you were at the heart of the festivities or enjoying a quieter evening with friends and family.
As we step into January, it is worth reflecting on the vital role played by Transport for London (TfL) last night. Navigating the city after the midnight celebrations can often be a challenge, but thanks to the provision of overnight services, Londoners were given several reliable alternatives to the night bus network to ensure a smooth journey home.
Comprehensive Overnight Services
To support the New Year’s Eve celebrations, TfL operated an all-night service across several key networks. This expanded capacity is essential for passenger comfort and safety during one of the busiest nights of the year. The services included:
- The Tube: All-night running on the majority of lines.
- The Elizabeth line: Providing a frequent and high-capacity cross-city connection.
- London Overground: All-night services on specific routes.
- DLR and London Trams: Ensuring reliable late-night links for East and South London.
Having these rail and tram options available makes a significant difference, helping everyone avoid the heavy congestion and long queues often found at bus stops during the early hours of New Year's Day.
Have Your Say: Which Service Should Go 24/7 Next?
While the New Year’s Eve provision is a fantastic example of what our transport network can do, I am keen to know your thoughts on the future of permanent night services.
I have posted a poll on both X (formerly Twitter) and Mastodon asking you to vote on which service you believe should be the next to receive a regular night service. Whether you feel a particular Overground branch or a specific Tube line is overdue for 24-hour operation, your input is incredibly valuable.

A Note for My Followers on Bluesky
I am aware that many of you are now active on Bluesky. Unfortunately, the platform has not yet enabled a poll feature for its users. If you would like to have your say, please consider using your X or Mastodon account to cast your vote so that your preference is counted in the final results before the deadlines mentioned above.
Taking Action for Better Services
If you feel strongly about a particular service getting a regular 24-hour weekend upgrade, please don't let your voice stop at my poll! I would highly encourage you to contact TfL directly or reach out to a London Assembly member to share my suggestion. Advocacy from passengers is the best way to ensure our transport network continues to evolve and meet the demands of a 24-hour global city.
Thank you for your continued support and for being such an engaged community. I look forward to seeing which service comes out on top!
I would like to extend an invite for you to follow me on X (formerly Twitter) for transport-related updates.
