London Bus Tender Awards: Retentions for First Bus and Stagecoach

In this round of London Bus Tender Awards, Transport for London (TfL) has announced that routes 116 and 117 has been retained by First Bus (London United), and school route 667 has been retained by Stagecoach London, both using existing vehicles.

LBSL intends to enter into new contracts for the following routes with the operators listed below:

Route 116
Retained by: London United (branded as First Bus)
PVR: 8
Vehicles: Existing hybrid double deck
Contract start date: 22nd August 2026
Contract end date: 11th January 2030

Route 117
Retained by: London United
PVR: 11
Vehicles: Existing diesel double deck
Contract start date: 4th September 2027
Contract end date: 11th January 2030

Route 667
Retained by: Stagecoach East London
PVR: 4
Vehicles: Existing hybrid double deck
Contract start date: 13th March 2027
Contract end date: 10th March 2034

The vehicles detailed above will meet Euro VI emissions standards.

Transport for London Freedom of Information release: TfL has published documents on the New Bus for London project from 2009-10. The papers cover plans, rising costs, safety concerns and delivery risks linked to the hybrid Routemaster-style buses introduced under a Mayoral initiative. ๐Ÿš

⚖️ Communications from 2010 showed the New Bus for London (New Routemaster) faced legal uncertainty over its open rear platform, which was seen as conflicting with European safety rules. UK authorities approved it under a domestic scheme and agreed to defend the decision if challenged.
