Transport for London Lists Four Pre-Qualified Manufacturers to Design and Build a New Fleet of High-Spec Trams

Transport for London (TfL) has listed four pre-qualified manufacturers to design and build a new fleet of trams for their tram network in South London.

TfL Press release:

• Manufacturer sought to build 24 new air-conditioned trams
• The new trams will provide customers with a more comfortable and reliable service, with new features including mobile charge points and real-time travel information
• The new generation of trams will start to be introduced in the late 2020s, subject to funding
• An option to procure additional trams in the future that could enable a full fleet replacement

TfL to remove cash fares for Croydon Tramlink

TfL has announced that cash fares will be removed on Tramlink which will bring them in line with London Buses.

Automatic braking system for South London Trams

TfL are implementing a new system for the trams which will automatically apply the brakes when they exceeded the speed limit at high risk locations. This will improve safety for the Tram service in South London.

TfL has begun the tender process for the installation of a new safety system on the London Trams network that will automatically apply the brakes should the speed limit be exceeded at high risk locations.

Consultation to abolish cash fares for Croydon Tramlink

TfL has opened up a consultation to abolish cash fares for the Croydon Tramlink network.

Transport for London (TfL) has begun an eight-week public consultation on plans to make trams in London 'cashless'.

The proposal would see existing cash ticket machines, which only sell a small number of the more expensive paper tickets every week and do not allow customers to top-up their Oyster card, removed from the Tram network.

More new bus purchases, new West Croydon bus station and another SRM update

I have lots of bus news for you today from around Britain and Ireland and have selected various articles from the Web which I’ll re-print here and comment on, so let’s begin.

First up, we have the news that Stagecoach East Scotland has ordered the Volvo B5LH with Enviro400 MMC bodywork for their routes 20 and 21.

Stagecoach has ordered seven Volvo/ADL hybrid double-decks for its Dundee and Angus bus fleet with delivery due next spring.

The new buses will be introduced to routes 20 and 21, which run between Brechin, Forfar, Kirriemuir and Dundee providing regular journeys for commuters, students and shoppers into the city as well as providing vital local links to Stracathro Hospital.

As we move into April there is some good news for commuters in the South of Greater London with the Tramlink system.

Wimbledon Tram services increase by 50 per cent

From next week, passengers travelling on Transport for London's (TfL) Tram network will be able to take advantage of more frequent services.

On Monday 4 April, services between Wimbledon and Croydon will rise from eight to 12 trams per hour. The increase in frequency follows the completion of work to build an additional tram platform at Wimbledon station late last year.
