More Electric Buses for London

Earlier this week, TFL issued a press release about the roll out of the new single deck electric buses.

The two Optare MetroCity buses are now in service on route 312, which is operated by Arriva, between South Croydon and Norwood Junction. The bus route is used by around 4,700 passengers a day. Passengers travelling on these buses will benefit from much lower noise and vibration levels compared to regular buses with diesel engines.

These new electric buses are the latest addition to Europe's greenest bus fleet and will increase TfL's experience and understanding of this relatively new technology. The buses were built by UK bus manufacturer Optare, which is part of the Hinduja Group, based in Sherburn in Elmet, North Yorkshire. They have zero tail pipe emissions at point of use, resulting in lower overall carbon emissions.

Hovercrafts for London River Services?

Short Lived London Regional Transport Logo

In 1984, the British government brought in the London Regional Transport Act 1984. I was scanning through the pages of the Act, over on Legislation.gov.uk and I stumbled upon the ‘Operating Powers of London Regional Transport’ page.

In paragraph one of the ‘carriage and storage’ section, it states that London Regional Transport can operate in any form of transport from land and water, which also includes 'hovercrafts'.

If you don’t believe me, here is the relevant text:

TFL speeds the 'ultra low' emission bus rollout

TFL is investing more into more environmentally friendly and cleaner buses for London streets.

From their press release

More than 300 buses with the latest Euro VI engines will be operating on London's roads by the end of this year, Transport for London (TfL) announced today.
Over two thirds of these (215) will be hybrid diesel-electric double decker buses.  Under the ULEZ proposal, all buses driving in central London from 2020 will need to meet the Euro VI standard for NOx emissions.
The effectiveness of Euro VI engines in reducing harmful emissions has been substantiated in testing by TfL that re-creates real world driving conditions in London. During this testing, a bus with a Euro VI Engine was found to have 95 per cent lower NOx emissions than a bus with a Euro V engine (down from 10 g/km to 0.5 g/km).  This test result correlates with testing conducted by manufacturers.

Tyne and Wear bus services to be operated by the council

Go North East bus 3962 Volvo B7TL Wrightbus Eclipse Gemini NK06 JXE The Angel livery in Newcastle 9 May 2009

Bus services in Tyne and Wear are to be controlled by the council as Councillors have backed plans for regulated services under the Quality Contracts Scheme.

In a move which could signal the biggest changes to the way buses operate across the region since de-regulation in the 1980s, members of the North East Combined Authority (neca) have today agreed to submit proposals for the introduction of a Quality Contracts Scheme (QCS) for consideration by a special independent panel.
The north east is the first part of the country to reach this stage in developing a Quality Contracts Scheme under legislation introduced in 2000. The new scheme would see bus companies contracted to provide routes by Nexus on behalf of the North East Combined Authority, rather than the bus operators deciding which services to run on the basis of market forces.

The conversion for Route 453 will be 'phased in' in batches instead of a complete overnight conversion. The route will be 'one man operation' so the rear door will be used as a normal door and no second crew member will be present.

Route 66 conversion is now confirmed by Transport for London

This is a follow up to my previous article titled "Where's the double deckers for route 66?"

Transport for London has confirmed that the Route 66 will be using double deck buses. Likely to be used is the DW's from the cast off's of route 38 and 242. But the Peak vehicle requirement will be reduced from 14 back to 11 buses because London Buses added extra workings onto route 66 because of the capacity of the single deck buses.

From their press release

From Saturday 30 August route 66 will convert from single to double deck buses.
Route 66, which is operated by Arriva Kent Thameside, runs from Romford Station to Leytonstone via Romford Market, Chadwell Heath, Newbury Park Station, Gants Hill Station, Redbridge Station and Wanstead Station.
On Saturday the route's 60 capacity single deck buses will be replaced by double deck buses that can carry 87 passengers.
This improvement has been made by Transport for London (TfL) to ensure that all passengers throughout the route can benefit from higher capacity vehicles.

Driving into London can take longer and expensive as you have to tackle your way through the traffic jam, pay the Congestion charge and pay a fortune for parking. If your going into Central London for the purpose of attending appointments, Job interview, tourism…etc

The fuel would cost you between £5.00 or £15.00 (Source Google Maps) to drive inside the M25 motorway and into Central London, depending where you travel from.
